'Natives from the coast today brought my father home -- he had been mortally wouded, and died within two hours.
'Before he died, he told me the story...
'"I traced Rachamond to a hotel and climbed up to his room.
'"There I found Rachamond resting on the bed. 'I've come to get you, Rachamond!'
'"'What!! You... no... th-that's impossible!' exclaimed Rachamond in utter disbelief. 'I... I saw you drown in the waterfall! Well, this time I'll make absolutely sure you die!!' he said as he drew his pistol from under the pillow.
'"'Put the revolver away, Rachamond! The ghost who walks can never die!!'
'"'Is it possible... the Blacks are right -- that you're really a ghost!?'
'"In spite of Rachamond shaking with terror, a part of his brain still functioned coolly...
'"And he pulled the trigger!
'"I was shot and fell on the floor. Rachamond fled the scene. A native hotel employee heard the shot being fired and not long after, entered the room.
'"'You have to help me... must get into the jungle... back... back to the skull cave!'"
'The native helped my father, who was carried home through the jungle to the Deep Woods.
'With his last breath, my father said to me, "My son... you must find... Rachamond... and bring him to justice..."
'"Yes, father", I promised.
'And so my father died and after I had sworn the Phantom oath, I carried him to the crypt.'
